Programs and Addiction Related Information for The Alcoholic,
The Drug Addict and Their Families
Most
people addicted to drugs and alcohol believe
in the beginning that they can control their addictions on
their own, and most try to stop without going to a drug and
alcohol rehab program or center. However, the majority of
these attempts result in a continuous cycle of failure to
achieve long-term abstinence from their drug and alcohol addictions.
Research has consistently shown that long-term drug use results
in significant changes in brain function that persist long
after the individual stops using drugs. These drug-induced
changes in brain function may have many behavioral consequences
for the chronic relapser of drugs and alcohol, including the
continuous compulsion to give in to their addictions. What
does this mean in plain english?
Long-term drug and alcohol abuse creates significant
changes in the brain that continue long after the person stops
using drugs and alcohol. These changes can be a major contributing
factor to that individual relapsing and returning to their
drug and alcohol use after short/long periods of abstinence.
This needs to be understood and taken into consideration when
a person is looking for drug and alcohol addiction treament
and rehabilitation.
